A TEEN lodger who lived at Fred and Rose West’s ‘House of Horrors’ has spoken for the first time about the shocking abuse she witnessed in their home.

Gill Britt, now 58, spoke about the horrific marks left on the body of Fred’s daughter Anne Marie who was 13 at the time.

Ms Britt rented the first floor of the couple’s home in 1978 and regularly drowned-out their yelling by playing her records loud.

She revealed her experiences on the podcast Unheard: The Fred and Rose West Tapes, where she said she saw bruises on a 13-year-old’s breasts and thighs.

Ms Britt was a 17-year-old “rebellious punk rocker” when she moved in and claimed to have witnessed the aftermath of their attacks.

SICK SEXUAL FANTASIES

The Wests’ murdered at least 12, including young children, between 1967 and 1987.

The majority were subjected to the couple’s sick sexual fantasies.

This included rape, bondage, torture and mutilation, before they were dismembered and buried in their cellar or garden.

Ms Britt recalled one day when the extent of the couple’s abuse truly shocked her.

She had very pale skin as I recall, very pale. She had black bruises all below her bra line, on her chest, on her breasts.

Anne Marie, who was 13 at the time, knocked on her door and came inside “quite distressed”.

Normally the West children were not allowed in that part of the lodger’s house.

Ms Britt said: “She pulled down her blouse from the top where the lining of where her bra would be.

She had very pale skin as I recall, very pale. She had black bruises all below her bra line, on her chest, on her breasts.

I did take it in my stride because I was very naive but I do remember how horrific those bruises were.”

BRUISES ON HER INNER THIGHS

Ms Britt said that at the time she “didn’t comprehend… how bad this was”.

She added: “I remember her lifting her school skirt up and these horrible black bruises were inside her thighs.

“Straight away she made it quite clear that people were doing this to her.”

Fred West killed himself in prison in 1995 while awaiting trial. His wife Rose is serving a life sentence.

Ms Britt says that as a teenager she did not understand the severity of the situation.

But since growing-up, having children and other life experiences, she now has no doubts about what she saw.

Ms Britt added: “I know that those injuries were inflicted in a very abusive way.”

SINISTER GOINGS ON

Anne Marie was physically and sexually assaulted from the age of eight by her vile parents.

She escaped their home, dubbed the “house of horrors”, a few years later in 1985 and would go onto testify against them in court.

Ms Britt claimed to have heard some of the sinister goings on while she lived in the home.

She said: “There was a lot of he shouting, a lot of effing and b’ing going on and calling the children effing b***** and so on.”

Ms Britt said she never to saw the Wests’ physically abuse their children.

She added “You would hear it, it was pretty obvious.

“You would hear her shouting out or she would be chasing them in some way it sounded like that.

You could hear her rowing with them and you hear crying or them shouting ‘oww’ or ‘get off” and this kind of thing.”

‘STOP IT DADDY’

Ms Britt’s was not the first account of life inside the West’s home.

Another lodger Jayne Hamer told Sir Trevor McDonald how she was given a tour of the couple’s cellar.

Little did she know, that beneath her feet were several bodies.

She claimed it was the “darkest, dankest place” she had ever seen and believed she was lucky to escape becoming “the next victim”.

During her stay, Ms. Hamer also said the voice of a child yelling “stop it daddy, stop it daddy” and “screaming in the middle of the night”.

The Wests’ crime spree would be put to an end after an 1992 child investigation when two of their daughters Charmaine and Heather went missing.

Police execute a search warrant of their house and gardens where they found two dismembered and decapitated young women.

They were arrested and later Fred West admitted to murdering the women.

END OF THE LINE

He also confessed to hiding nine bodies in the cellar of their home.

On December 13, 1994, West was charged on 12 counts of murder and taken into custody at Winson Green Prison in Birmingham.

Fred hanged himself in jail on New Year’s Day 1995 while awaiting trial for 12 murders.

Rose, 64, was jailed for life in 1995 for killing 10 women. She is currently imprisoned at HMP Low Newton in Durham.

WEST CHILD HAD GONORRHOEA

Later, John Fitzgerald of Gloucestershire County Council would lead an inquiry into the couple’s dealings with social services.

He found 31 occasions when the West children were hospitalised or looked over by care providers for concerning injuries or illnesses.

This included one child who contracted gonorrhoea and another who suffered injuries after being hit with a sledgehammer by Fred.

People who are abusers are like everybody else to look at, they don’t walk around in dirty macs.

Mr Fitzgerald told the Mirror: “I talked to a lot of people who asked me surely you could tell by looking at them? And I said no.

“People who are abusers are like everybody else to look at, they don’t walk around in dirty macs.”

He said that the couple often tricked authorities with staged scenes at their home to show them as a ‘happy family’.

PLAYING THEIR PART

Mr Fitzgerald recalled one account where the kids “looked very calm and happy and normal”.

He added: “Those children knew perfectly well what they had to do and they had to play their part in keeping quiet.

“They did it very well.

What happens with people like the West’s is they know perfectly well that what they are doing is unacceptable to society as a whole.

“So what they do is work very very hard at trying to cover up and show the world a different face.”
