JEFFREY Epstein tried to pay off witnesses with a £280,000 bribe to buy their silence, prosecutors have alleged.
The billionaire reportedly sent two witnesses money in late November and early December 2018 after a US paper started publishing allegations against the registered sex offender.
The US attorney’s office in Manhattan made the allegations in an effort for the 66-year-old be denied bail while he awaits trail, claiming the payments are evidence he might try to influence witnesses if he is not detained.
Prosecutors have not charged Mr Epstein in connection with the new allegations and the US attorney’s office did not comment, the New York Times reported.
His lawyers have maintained their clients has not broken any laws in the past 14 years, since he pleaded guilty to state prostitution charges in Florida and served 13 months in jail.
Mr Epstein has pleaded not guilty to the new federal charges against him.
Two days after the Miami Herald published their investigation, Mr Epstein wired £79,000 to an individual who had been named as a possible co-conspirator in this deal with Florida prosecutors.
The day after that, he sent £198,000 to someone who named as a co-conspirator in Florida, but was also identified as someone who helped him in his alleged sex-trafficking scheme in the New York indictment.
Prosecutors said the payments and their timing “suggests the defendant was attempting to further influence co-conspirators who might provide information against him in light of the recently emerging allegations”.
These fresh allegations come as 14 more women, some of them underage, have come forward claiming to be victims of billionaire alleged sex trafficker.
He was arrested last Saturday and is facing up to 45 years in jail for allegedly abusing “dozens” of victims, some as young as 14.
US prosecutors say they found “an extraordinary” number of snaps of nude and partially nude young women at his mansion.
Lawyers said other women claiming to be victims of his alleged trafficking scheme had come forward after an appeal by prosecutors.
