DONALD Trump demanded his allies cough up more military cash before his crunch meeting with Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Japan.

President Trump first met with host Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as the summit kicked off on Friday – just days after he blasted the US-Japan security pact as unbalanced.

Trump will meet Russia’s Vladimir Putin for the first time since special counsel Robert Mueller found extensive Russian meddling in the US presidential election in 2016[/caption]

As he sat opposite Mr Abe in Osaka this morning, Trump said: “We’ll be discussing trade, we’ll be discussing military.”

The pair have enjoyed a close friendship since President Trump took office.

Trump joked about his previous trip to Japan in May – when he presented an award to a sumo wrestling champion in Tokyo.

He said: “Everybody’s talking about it all over the world.”

If Japan is attacked, we will fight World War Three… But if we’re attacked, Japan doesn’t have to help us at all

But earlier this week, the president criticised what he characterised as an unfair security partnership.

Mr Trump told Fox News on Wednesday: “If Japan is attacked, we will fight World War Three.

“We will go in and we will protect them and we will fight with our lives and with our treasure.

“We will fight at all costs, right?

“But if were attacked, Japan doesn’t have to help us at all.

“They can watch it on a Sony television, the attack.”

The US has committed to defending Japan – which renounced the right to wage war after its defeat in World War Two.

Japan in return provides military bases that Washington uses to project power deep into Asia.

PUTIN MEETING

Trump will later hold his first meeting with Russia’s Vladimir Putin since US special counsel Robert Mueller found extensive evidence of Russian meddling in the 2016 US election.

Mr Trump said in advance of the Putin meeting he expected a “very good conversation” with the Russian leader.

But he told reporters: “What I say to him is none of your business.”

Trump also met India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi – who he warned on Twitter the day before about tariffs on US goods.

But he insisted he and Mr Modi have become “great friends” and the two countries “have never been closer.”

He then held talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel – who he described as a “fantastic person” and a “friend”.

Trump has complained in the past that Germany is taking advantage of the US on support for NATO.

The president said he and Merkel “have many things to talk about” – but did not specify if that included military spending.
